Tragedy: Experiments in Pain & Pleasure

This is a fourteen week course. The first part will be taught by Prof. Felix Budelmann of the Classics Department and the second part by Dr John Flood.

Books

Books in translation (e.g., Greek or Russian) must be read in the editions specified in the course details on OCASYS.

Where online resources are listed, you can purchase the texts in paper form (often cheaply) if you prefer to read a physical book. Some of the paper books listed are also available in ebook format and you may purchase these if you prefer (but be sure that they are the right editions).

Plays originally written in English may be read in editions other than those on OCASYS provided that they are unabridged scholarly ones (e.g., Oxford’s World’s Classics, Penguin Classics, Methuen Drama, the Arden Shakespeare). OCASYS generally lists inexpensive texts, but if you have some of the English language plays already, you may use these.
