Order & Conflict in Renaissance England

This is an MA tutorial for a group of 7-8 students of the MA in Literary Studies. Students will get options to enroll to tutorials after the academic year has begun.

Reading

  • Stephen Greenblatt et al. eds. The Norton Anthology of English Literature. 10th ed. Vol. B. New York: W. W. Norton, 2018 (illustrated below). Many students own this already. If you are buying it for the first time, be sure to get the correct volume and edition (there are many volumes and editions of Norton’s anthologies). This is one volume only.
  • Shakespeare, Macbeth. Ed. Robert S. Miola. 2nd ed. New York: W. W. Norton, 2013. You must get this specific text of the play (illustrated below) as it comes with supplementary readings that we will use.
  • Shakespeare, Richard III. You can use any academic edition of this play, e.g., from the Oxford World’s Classics or Penguin Classics, or Arden Shakespeare series. Through the library, you have free access to a text through Oxford Scholarly Editions Online.
  • The plays by Christopher Marlowe are available through Oxford Scholarly Editions Online. If you want to use a paper version, there are recent single volume collections of Marlowe’s plays by Oxford World’s Classics and Penguin Classics.

We will also be watching Roman Polanski’s famous film of Macbeth (1971) and Derek Jarman’s controversial film version of Marlowe’s Edward II (1991). Both films will be available online on campus. Before this they can be borrowed from the library as DVDs.
